About Me

I'M NIOBE BURDEN

I am an internationally recognized photographer with 30 years of photographic experience who moved to the Tahoe area from Maine in 1998. My work has been recognized with three Fuji Masterpiece Awards and multiple honorable mentions at the International Photography Awards.

I am a visual artist who spends my time in the Reno/ Lake Tahoe area when not traveling the rest of the world capturing unique perspectives of places and the light on landscape.

The compelling beauty of the places I have lived has captivated me since I was young. With the influence of my mom as a painter and photographer, I grew up on the coast of Maine. After earning a Bachelors Degree in Business, I took advantage of traveling on a shoe-string budget to many aesthetically beautiful and culturally rich places in the world. I supplemented my practice with commerical photography assisting and custom film lab printing, gaining technical skills and a deeper understanding of the properties of light.

In 1998, I moved to Lake Tahoe, California and since have been sought for my fine art installations as well as my instructional style. To be a successful artist, you need to be business smart, listen carefully to your clients, and be able to interpret their needs creatively and effectively. I believe finding your true niche is where this comes easy, and equates to doing what you’re most passionate about.

Following my husband's employment moves from 2013-2021, I have had the opportunity to live in Australia and Europe which has afforded me to immerse myself in extraordinary art and has also rekindled my passion to create new collections.

Artist Statement

"When I photograph, I am drawn to the dramatic times of predawn and after dusk. I seek unique perspectives that may not be readily apparent in a landscape. My fine art visual interpretations are meant to be simple but emotional images that convey a feeling of harmony and serenity. While I also love to chronicle the unique story of a place in an out of the ordinary context capturing its textures and details"

Techniques

Although originally a film photographer, I do embrace digital capture for its ability to attain the subtleties in color and detail in shadow and highlight. I think it is important that the original color seen is rendered accurately, as nature's palette is truly amazing on its own.
Primarily self- taught, I have worked in the commercial studio and with location assisting, set preparation and styling, custom "film" lab photo printing, and have participated and taught professional workshops and lectures.
